Mausam focuses on a proud Punjabi happy-go-lucky boy, Harry. Harry loves to race with the local train, and believes he will surely beat it one day. When he meets his new neighbour, Aayat a muslim girl who is living with her aunt, the two fall in love at first sight. Their friendship and love grows during Harry's older sister Pammo's wedding. On the last day of the wedding Harry asks Aayat if she loves him, she tells him to meet her tomorrow and she will give him an answer. The next day Harry sets out to meet Aayat. He reaches her home only to find that Aayat left overnight with her aunt. Aayat's father was involved in a Kashmir bomb and they had to leave instantly. Harry doesn't know the reason and thinks that Aayat ditched him and doesn't love him. Heartbroken Harry, gets and acceptance into the Air Force and decides to take the offer.
7 years later Aayat is in Scotland at the Academy of Dance and Harry is in Scotland as well on an Air Force exchange. Aayat sees Harry but is hesitant to meet him in the thought that he might not recognise her. Harry sees Aayat walking through the streets of Scotland and makes contact with her. The two realise that they still have feelings for each other and Harry asks her to marry him. Aayat replies that come to my house for dinner and you will get your answer. The next day Harry is on his way to Aayat's house when he gets called on a mission as war has broken out. A lost and heartbroken Aayat longs for Harry and believes that one day he will come back. On the other side Harry is leading a group of pilots to bomb a border, during the mission Harry's plane has a malfunction and has an accident resulting in Harry's left arm being paralyzed. Aayat continues to love and think of Harry and writes him letters to his home.
In her last letter she states that if she doesn't receive a reply she will consider that she has lost him forever. Pammo gives birth to a baby boy and as a wish to her son she asks Harry to find Aayat. Harry agrees and set off to find his love one more time. He sees Aayat at a train station all alone. He runs back only to find her in the train with Akram (her friend) and Akram's son. Harry thinks that Aayat is married to him and the boy is their child. He leaves silently, in pain and heart break. It has been 2 years now and Harry is in Ahmedhbad attending his friends wedding.
